It's all Greek to me!

greek_alphabetUpon being asked by a regular contributor to our website as to why Greek text would not display as anything other than ????’s, it seems like I’ve unearthed a whole hornets nest in attempting to rectify the situation. The bottom line seems to be that the whole system we use would have to be tinkered with at root level, and the risk of losing posts etc. would be very high. Therefore it seemed a better idea to use a less drastic option until we can figure out how to play safely!!

I have set up a separate blog as a free WordPress issue, that despite being totally free, has none of the problems we seem to have at all! The posts will be linked through to the main website here, and will also be integrated into our Facebook page that seems to be growing strongly in following, but if any of our links seems to take you to an unexpected location, don’t worry, everything is all above board. :)

In the meantime, if any tecchies want to throw their tuppeny worth in to help us out, please feel free to leave a comment to this post.

Many thanks, and God bless you,

John.

  • Hi,

Greek shouldn’t be a problem in general, provided that the HTML page that you serve use a sensible character encoding such as UTF-8, and as long as your stylesheets specify fonts that contain Greek characters on the most common platforms used by your visitors.

If you want to give me a link to a problematic page, I’d be happy to take a look at it and see whether I can spot what is wrong.

  • I think you’re using WordPress? I am new myself to WordPress (just going about setting up my own installation, in fact). But have you tried this:

  • Hi Daniel,

It seems to be, after much rummaging around on WordPress help forums, that the issue is with the mySQL database. Apparently the automatic installer I used from the cpanel, has a regular habit of using an incorrect encoding. As a result, the blog system is working fine, but the database is conflicting with it. Andy is looking into it at the moment, but thanks so much for your concern.;)

    God bless,

    John.

  • Hi,

    Andy
